The way into creating something fresh and truly unique as a designer/artist starts with looking at the same subject or group of subjects from many directions. Then we ask lots of questions, discerning exactly what of these little explorations created a sensation of “Yes! That intrigues me.”
SFArtsED Summer 2020 fashion students were asked to explore the wild worlds of fungi, mold, orchids, carnivorous plants, and succulents. They researched a variety of species in each of the aforementioned categories and then sketched, painted, and created textile swatches and color stories based upon their findings.
After all of the research, they decided on a primary concept based on what was most inspiring, poignant, or viscerally interesting before beginning a deeper dive into turning that “inspo” into a collection, complete with their own textile design, mood boards, color stories, and, of course, the lewks! What follows is each student’s finished collection.
